JAL NETI — The purpose is cleansing, not forcing.
Jal Neti is one of the six traditional cleansing practices of Hatha Yoga, known as Shatkarma. It is practised by gently passing warm saline water through one nostril and allowing it to flow out through the other.
Traditionally, Jal Neti is practised in the morning, on an empty stomach, before Asana, Pranayama or meditation.
Why practise Jal Neti?
It is traditionally used to:
- Cleanse the nasal passages
- Support clearer and more comfortable nasal breathing
- Remove accumulated mucus and impurities
- Prepare the breath for Pranayama and meditation
- Create a feeling of freshness and lightness
- Develop awareness and sensitivity towards the breath
Beyond physical cleansing, Jal Neti teaches discipline, patience, awareness and respect for the body.
Practise gently and never force the water through a completely blocked nose. Use safe water, the correct saline preparation and clean equipment. After practice, dry the nasal passages properly.
Jal Neti is not simply about cleansing the nose.
It is about preparing the body and breath for deeper Yoga practice.
